VDU Assessments

Poorly designed work stations can lead to employees suffering with pain in the neck, shoulders, back, arms and wrists, and this is problematic for employers as well as the employees themselves. Protecting your employees by ensuring that they have safe and comfortable working practices is an essential way to take care of your team.

A VDU Assessment involves assessing your workplace for ergonomic suitability, including the Visual Display Units (VDU) used by employees and the surrounding equipment such as computer keyboards, monitors, software and chairs. This assesses environmental factors of the working environment and is a legal requirement for all those who use VDU for more than one hour per day, and is therefore most relevant to office environments.

VDU Legislation Compliance

VDU Assessments should include an overview of the tasks carried out at the workstation and record compliance with legislation, as well as providing a detailed action plan to address potential problems. As part of the VDU Assessment process, your organisation will receive a comprehensive report that identifies areas that require improvement and strategies to implement better practice. Each employee involved is entitled to receive a copy of the risk analysis relevant to them. This will help to ensure that required actions are taken and safer practices set up.

Employer Responsibilities

VDU Assessments do not apply to laptops, only to workstations with a keyboard and separate monitor, although long hours of use on a laptop are not recommended. Employers are legally required to provide training on how to use a work station before employees begin their work and whenever the work station is changed. Training should include a detailed understanding of the computer system that is linked to the VDU, instructions that enable thorough understanding of the applicable regulations and orientation on the proper arrangements of equipment and the basics of ergonomics.
