First Aid Training is an essential for many businesses, and choosing the right first aid training provider is critical. When you’re looking for first aid training in Cork, it’s important to consider the benefits of various different providers and make a choice that suits your team and your business to ensure that you get the best possible outcomes for your investment.
First aid training keeps your employees and customers safe, and therefore is a vital way to protect your business as well. A good first aid training course will include comprehensive training in becoming a first responder, giving life-saving care and maintaining support until professional medical assistance arrives. This means that your trained first aiders will be able to handle minor injuries and accidents at work, and will be able to decide when a situation requires the emergency services to attend.
Specialised First Aid Training
Depending on the industry you are working in, you may require a specialised first aid training course that applies to your line of work. For instance, if you work in an environment with heavy machinery, you may need to ensure that your first aiders are equipped to deal with machine injuries and accidents in more depth than a general first aid course will cover. However, most industries will be adequately covered with a first aid training course that gives a good grounding in wound care and accident management, as well as teaching CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation) and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator.
When you are looking for a First Aid training course that will be a good fit for your team, you should consider the content of the course and the way it is accredited, as well as the qualifications of the instructor. Ensure the course is relevant to your business and your industry and find out whether your provider can tailor a course to the specific needs of your workplace or industry.
How to Select a First Aid Training Course
A good quality first aid course will give attendees a good understanding of how to assess a patient, how to keep themselves and others safe while giving first aid, common medical emergencies, injury management and shock, burns and electrical injuries and incident reporting. Training will focus on increasing confidence to deal with medical emergencies and giving first aid that is appropriate to the situation.
Here at ASM, we believe that it is essential to cover all elements of first aid that may be required in the workplace, and our First Aid Responder Course includes:
- Patient assessment
- Incident procedures

- Common medical emergencies
- Injury management and shock
- Care of an unconscious patient
- Burns and electrical injury care
- Hypothermia and Hyperthermia
- Information management
- Communications
- Well-being of a first aid responder

Take the time to investigate the First Aid Training providers in your area and create a shortlist according to the benefits of each. Of course, it is important to consider the cost as this is an essential investment in your business but you will want to ensure that you get the best value for your money.
Face to Face or Online Training?
Technology is an incredible resource and being able to attend online training is very convenient for many people, but for first aid training, face-to-face training is particularly important. When you are learning to diagnose medical conditions and emergency situations, it is vital to have as much real world experience as possible, and techniques such as CPR and the use of a defibrillator cannot be adequately taught without real opportunities to practice.
At ASM, we take the time to ensure that every participant has fully understood and learned the techniques we teach and we assess our first aid training course by checking the competency of participants with each skill. Our trainers are passionate about their areas of expertise and bring a wealth of real-world knowledge and practical tips to enhance your learning experience.
First Aid Training Course Duration
The length of first aid training courses can vary and some basic courses may be completed in a few hours, but a more in-depth course is required to equip you as a workplace first aider. Our First Aid Responder Beginner Training Course is a three-day course that gives you time to fully immerse yourself in the subject and become confident in giving life-saving first aid. Ensure that the time commitment required is suitable for your business and the team members undertaking training, and look for recommendations or reviews from others who have completed the training.
First aid certificates are time-limited and will require an updated course to re-certify. This is because best practice changes with time and it is important to ensure that workplace first aiders have access to the most current knowledge. Our first aider training course is certified by PHECC and remains valid for two years. To maintain eligibility for re-certification, you must renew it within this timeframe. If the two years lapse, you will need to complete the full three-day course once again.
Using an Automated External Defibrillator
An automated external defibrillator is invaluable in the workplace as it can analyse the heart rhythm and deliver an electric shock to those who have suffered an abnormal heart rhythm or cardiac arrest, aiming to restore the heart rhythm to normal. First Aid training courses will usually cover the use of this piece of equipment, teaching attendees how to handle and use a defibrillator in their place of work. A defibrillator is designed to be easy to use and usually gives instructions to the user via a voice-recorded message so that it is used accurately, and this type of training can be life-saving both at work and in public.
The only other treatment for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is CPR, (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation), which is a major component of most first-aid training courses. CPR is the process of attempting to restart or support a patient’s heart by using chest compressions and rescue breaths in a ratio of thirty compressions to two rescue breaths. This is unlikely to restart a heart without any other intervention but can support life until medical professionals arrive at the scene of the emergency.
